In a world where only logos was important, the winners of classical music competitions would be judged on sound alone.

In our world, however, ethos and pathos are important, too.

Dr Chia-Jung Tsay, a social psychologist at University College London (she’s also a classical pianist), has found that classical music competitions are judged by sight, not sound.
