米国, 2013年, バラク·オバマ

The annual dinner of the White House Correspondents’ Association (an organisation of journalists) is where, by tradition, the president gives a speech making fun of himself.

Barack Obama got lots of laughs at this year’s dinner, which was held last weekend.

At 10:14 (below) he talks about Sheldon Adelson, a billionaire businessman who supported Mitt Romney, Obama’s Republican opponent, during the 2012 presidential election campaign.

Did you know that Sheldon Adelson spent one hundred million dollars of his own money last year on negative ads? You’ve got to really dislike me to spend that kind of money.

I mean, that’s Oprah money.

You could buy an island and call it Nobama for that kind of money.

Sheldon would have been better off offering me a hundred million dollars to drop out of the race.

I probably wouldn’t have taken it. But I’d have thought about it.

Michelle would have taken it. You think I’m joking?

1) A ‘negative ad’ is an advertisement that attacks a person’s character or record.

2) ‘Oprah money’ is a slang expression. Oprah Winfrey, a talk-show host, is the richest self-made woman in America.

3) To be ‘better off’ means to be in a better position.

4) To ‘drop out’ means to give up / withdraw / stop doing something.
