I’m here tonight to talk about…

ウォーレン上院議員/民主党党大会プライムタイム·スピーチ
米国, 2012年, エリザベス·ウォーレン

The presidential election is not the only election happening in the United States next week. Americans will also be voting for senators, congressmen and state governors.

One of the closest Senate races is in Massachusetts. Scott Brown, a Republican, is defending the seat against Elizabeth Warren, a Democrat.

Warren gave a prime-time speech at the Democratic convention in September. CNN described it as “a strident speech that brought a packed convention arena to its feet in thunderous appreciation.”

Her focus was on the middle class, as in the section below at 1:26.

I’m here tonight to talk about hard-working people, people who get up early, stay up late, cook dinner and help out with homework. People who can be counted on to help their kids, their parents, their neighbors, and a lady down the street whose car broke down. People who work their hearts out, but are up against a hard truth: the game is rigged against them.

Note

‘To rig’ can mean to get something ready for use, particularly a ship or a boat. It can also mean to arrange things in a dishonest or unfair way.
