No more than a piece of paper

ヘルツォーグ国連大使/国連総会演説『シオニズム』
イスラエル, 1975年, ハイム·ヘルツォーグ

The Economist newspaper called it “one of the more dramatic scenes in modern diplomacy”.

In 1975 the General Assembly of the United Nations passed a resolution that described Zionism as a form of racism.

Israel’s UN ambassador Chaim Herzog (who would later become president of Israel) attacked the resolution in one of the most famous speeches of the 20th century.

He concluded (below, at 3:02) by tearing a copy of the resolution into two.

For us, the Jewish people, this resolution based on hatred, falsehood and arrogance, is devoid of any moral or legal value.

For us, the Jewish people, this is no more than a piece of paper and we shall treat it as such.

Thank you, Mr President.

Note

In 1991 the General Assembly voted to revoke the resolution. (revoke = reverse)
